Club Med resort

A second honeymoon… It all happened so quickly, Mark called me to let me know that we had been invited to join in the 60th celebration of Club Med in Mauritius at the new La Plantation d’Albion Villas. We organized the kids’ babysitters, packed our Club Med bags, and before we knew it we were boarding Air Mauritius. Mark and I had both never been to a Club Med resort before so could not wait to see what all the fuss was about.  Read more

THE PERFECT ILLUSION OF SOUND
Take a moment, and have a good look the image on the left. If you stare long enough, you will notice that circles appear to rotate. Ever wondered why this illusion and so many others are both stimulating and entertaining? Well perhaps its the fact that illusions push past the boundaries of our predictable expectations and that no immediate logical explanation comes to mind. Due to new technology, the same has finally happened to the audio industry. Audio products that push way past the boundaries of our audio expectations into an area where one begins to really appreciate the acoustic delivery of this unexplainable new technology. i-Fi (Intelligent Fidelity) a new store in The Cape Quarter has recently opened doors and offers high-quality audio products for the listener who is looking for something extra special. Something wow and something so '3D" that its almost unexplainable.

ESPIRE
One of the more unique two-wheeled wonders at this year’s Intermot show in Cologne is Third Element’s eSpire. This German bicycle features “hybrid drive,” meaning that it can be pedaled ebike-style with electric assist or driven with a throttle, like an electric motorcycle. Its mountain bike-like frame and wheels allow for off-road adventures, but it reportedly also makes a good commuter... and oh yeah, it looks pretty cool, too.

The eSpire has a BLDC 1.2kW/48V electric motor that delivers 150 Nm of torque. It’s powered by a removable 820 Wh Li-ion battery, which is good for over 1,500 charges. Like most ebike batteries, it reaches full charge in three hours. Range is around 65 km (40 miles) on battery only, and 90 km (56 miles) using pedal assist.

The eSpire will set you back 7,000 euro (about US$9,750), and is so far only available at stores in Germany.

COOLSCULPTING
Medical device company ZELTIQ has developed a safe procedure that could potentially say goodbye to “love handles." Developed at the Wellman Center of Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Coolsculpting is a method that freezes unwanted fat cells and removes them permanently without invasive surgery. After a series of clinical trials and evidence from ultrasound and histological results, Coolsculpting has recently been approved by the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is targeted for those who are not considered to be clinically overweight but may carry pockets of unwanted fat in areas of their body which have not responded to diet or exercise.

The procedure involves placing a specifically designed cooling applicator over the area desired for fat reduction, which then extracts energy from the underlying fat cells (i.e: cools them) without damaging skin or surrounding tissue. The procedure is designed to deliver controlled and precise cooling conditions to the targeted area, causing the cooled fat cells begin a process called apoptosis (natural cell death), reduce in size, and then be naturally removed through the body’s normal metabolic processes.

The procedure lasts between one to two hours and on average will reduce fat cells by 20 percent. There is no required recovery time after the procedure, so patients can resume normal activities immediately and should start to see results after three weeks.

LOOXCIE
Looxcie (pronounced "look-see," get it?) is a small, lightweight, always-on, Bluetooth-enabled camcorder that links up with a smartphone app to offer users easy upload to social networking video sites. Slip it over the ear and switch on to begin documenting your life. When it's not recording everything in front of you, it can be used to take calls with a talk-time said to be around ten hours.

The Looxcie camcorder features dual processor technology that allows the device to simultaneously or independently operate video and talk modes. Weighing only one ounce (less than 28g), the Bluetooth Class 2 device has 4GB of onboard storage that's said to offer over five hours of video storage. Video is recorded to MP4 format in HVGA resolution at 15 frames per second through an f2.8 lens. Users simply have to switch the unit on to start recording. Video processing software developed by Looxcie is included to help optimize power use, automatically correct for light and color, and format video for mobile devices.
